"Cast a fly, catch a student" outcome objectives
Overall Curriculum Goal: Provide learners with cognitive understanding of the social and ecological benefits of angling, the motor skills, knowledge and desire to catch a fish on a fly rod.
Lesson 1: Basics of Fly Fishing and Equipment - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know the basic fundamental difference between fly fishing and other methods.• Students will know the 3 basic insects imitated in fly fishing (caddisfly, mayfly, stonefly)• The student will know and be able to identify 8 components of a fly rod.• The student will know and be able to identify 8 components of a fly reel.• The student will know and be able to identify the backing, fly line and leader. Lesson 2: Knots and Leaders - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know and be able to tie 4 knots used in fishing.• The student will understand the purpose of a leader.• The student will understand turnover and the “Rule of 4.”• The student will build their own leader to use in class. Lesson 3: Introduction to Fly Casting - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know and be able to identify the “11 Steps to the Basic Fly Cast”.• The student will know and understand the “Range Rules” and proper use of the fly fishing equipment. Lesson 4: Assessing the Basic Fly Cast - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will identify and give feedback on the “11 Steps to the Basic Fly Cast”.• The student will demonstrate a successful basic fly cast 7 out of 10 times.• The student will know two ways to manipulate the casting loop.• The student will be introduced to different fish species and flies. Lesson 5: Reinforcing the Basic Fly Cast - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will demonstrate a successful basic fly cast 7 out of 10 times.• The student will reinforce the cast execution and strive for accuracy while executing the fly cast.• The student will continue to learn the different fish species and flies used in fly fishing. Lesson 6: Differentiating Fish Species - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will demonstrate a successful basic fly cast 7 out of 10 times.• The student will reinforce the cast execution and improve on the accuracy of their cast.• The student will learn distinguishing characteristics of the fish species they land on. Lesson 7: Introduction to Invertebrates - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know and be able to identify three common invertebrates.• The student will be able to compare and contrast the three common invertebrates.• The student will be able to infer where (above/below the surface) an invertebrate is found based on its structure. Lesson 8: Introduction To The "Pile" - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know and be able to identify the 3 hands used in flycasting:• Rod hand • Line hand• Reel hand • The student will understand the purpose of a fishing license.• The student will be able to complete a cast by shooting line & retrieving the "pile." • The student will understand and know how to successfully catch and release fish. Lesson 9: Casting using the Line Hand - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know how to use the line hand as he/she casts and fishes the fly.• The student will know and be able to identify at least 10 different fish species.• The students will think interdependently by working together to identify where different species might live based on the fish’ needs. Lesson 10: 9 Holes Of Fishing - What will students learn as a result of this lesson?• The student will know and be able to apply the key content and skills acquired during the CAFCAS unit.• The student will safely and successfully complete the tasks.
